Oh my henna!

I used to color my hair religiously.  From the age of 16 up until 30. The last time I colored my hair was the day after our second date.  So it's been almost two years.  I just got tired of the expense (it's really so much better at the salon), and I became curious about what my real hair color really was anyway.  It's sort of a boring, mousy brown if you want to know.

Well shortly after Lush opened here, I bought some of their henna hair color.  I had first seen it on our honeymoon and had wanted some ever since. It has been sitting in a drawer waiting for me to try it out for months.  Today was that day.

Doing this takes some preparation.  Henna is a stain, so you have to lay out newspapers and balm up your hairline.  It comes in a block - so I had to create a makeshift double boiler.  Then I added small amounts of boiling water until the blocks turned into a paste.  It quickly became apparent that this stuff was nothing like the hair dye I'm used to.  Behold.

If you are saying, "wow that bears a remarkable resemblance to baby poo", then you are right on. I didn't realize how literal they were being by putting the word "caca" in the name of the product. Because that's EXACTLY what it looks like.  And while it doesn't smell like it, it doesn't smell great either.

But I was not to be thwarted.  I marched that bowl to the sink, put on my rubber gloves, put my hair in sections, and attempted to put that baby poo on my hair.  One section in, I accepted the inevitable. This was going to be awful.  I couldn't get such a thick paste all the way to my roots and it was going to end up all over the bathroom.  I proceeded to dump it all out and rinse every last bit of the crap out of my hair.  Fortunately it takes 1-2 hours to dye, so my hair is still it's same old mousy brown.

I probably should have googled how other people have done this before I tried it.  Because after this experience, I'm fairly certain I'll never try it again.  Sorry Lush.  I still love all your other products.

    1. That's funny because the directions say, "until it is the consistency of brownie batter." I did it right!
